This year’s hillclimb had great weather and great competition. Once again, Marti Shea ruled the woman’s race winning yet another race up the rock pile. Check out some the photos from the day’s event.
24 Hours of Great Glen 2011
This gallery contains 26 photos.
Another terrific event was held this year at the 24 Hours of Great Glen on August 13, 2011. As usual the race organizer, Mary Power, did a outstanding job putting together this team event. The weather even cooperated with no … Continue reading
Newton’s Revenge 2011
This year’s Newton’s Revenge bicycle race up the Mount Washington Auto Road was run on July 9, 2011. It was a typical Mount Washington Day – cold, windy, and foggy on the summit, sunny below 5000 feet. As we have come to expect, Marti Shea from Marblehead, MA, was the first woman to cross the finish for the sixth time.
The first man to cross this year was Robert Douglas from Honeoye Falls, NY.
Shooting on the summit was interesting this year with the light constantly changing. Since we we actually in a cloud, as the clouds moved the exposure values could change as much as 2 full stops from one second to the next. To actually have a chance of getting consistant photos I had to shoot in Aperture priority with a -2/3 adjustment. This worked out well considering the horrible conditions, I was actually constantly wiping the moisture off my camera and lens due to the wind and high humidity.
Another fun day on the mountain. Next month we will be shooting the Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hill Climb and the 24 Hours of Great Glen bicycle races.

Urban Decay
Not too long ago I was in detroit visiting my daughter and her family. On Saturday, my son-in-law and his friend Johng took me to the old Packard Automotive plant to do some photography. The last Packard automobile is reputed to have been made on Jun 25, 2956 – (Click HERE to read more about this) so the plant has been abandoned for quite some time. The abandoned plant is hugh. And, as you might expect, filthy. The ceilings have all collapsed. Most of the steel has been taken as has most if not all of the copper wire. There are areas where the roofs have collapsed and others where the floor has buckled. In short a great place to take photographs. There are many interesting spots in the old plant. Check out the gallery to see a few of the photos I got that day.
Mount Washington Road Race
[oqeygallery id=2]
Another racing season on Mount Washington is underway with the completion of the Mount Washington Road Race on June 18th. With over a thousand competitors it was a grueling climb to the top of the highest peak in the Northeast. While it was a great day for running the race – overcast and in the 50′s – it was a tough day for photography. Dealing with constantly changing light values, fog, intermittent rain, and yes even occasional sunshine made documenting the event a challenge. But, a good time was had by all and there were some amazing firsts. For the first time ever, a racer over 90 years old completed the run to the summit. With another first, a runner became the first to run to the summit backwards running backwards up the mountain in a quest to enter the Guinness Book of World Records. We had a great day and all enjoyed the experience coming home with some great pics.
Boston Wall Grouping
I recently installeed a wall grouping of the crystal cascade waterfall off the Tuckerman’s Ravine Hiking Trail on Mount Washington, NH. The wall grouping consisted of 9 gallerywaps that covered 54 inches wide by 92 inches tall. The grouping brought a piece of Mount Washington into a Boston apartment.
Wall groupings are becoming much more popular, especially where there is a large wall or space that needs covering. Gallery wraps are excellent for use in wall groupings. Any of our images can be created into wall groupings. However, this one was exceptionally large and required the merging of a number of photos to get an effective file. The file size was enormous and actually required me to build a much more powerful computer to process the very large file.
I am currently building a gallery for viewing my landscape photos. Keep an eye on the blog and I wll post the link here when it is finished.
Everyone have a great Holiday season!
Christie and Ed’s Wedding

Last weekend I had the privilege to shoot Ed and Christie’s wedding at the Darby Field Inn. They were lucky enough to have a beautiful day. It offered us the opportunity to run down to the Swift river for a few frames at the covered bridge and the lower falls. It was a nice day for photography and
we captured some beautiful pictures that I’m sure the bride and groom, as well as their families, will enjoy for years.
The Darby field Inn did an excellent job hosting the wedding and is a beautiful location. The views were excellent.

2010 Mt. Washington Bicycle Hillclimb
The 2010 bicycle Hillclimb up Mount Washington was held on 8/21/10. Niko Toutenhoofd of Boulder, CO was the winner of the Men’s race with a time of 57:26 . Marti Shea of Marblehead, MA won the woman’s race with a time of 1:05:42. This marks the fourth time Marti has won a bicycle race up Mount Washington. On a mountain noted for it’s adverse and cloudy weather, the day was clear, relatively warm, and with very little wind. The same was true of the Newton’s Revenge race earlier this summer.
A field of over 600 racers climbed up 7.6 miles of pavement and gravel road to the summit of Mount Washington. Several times that number were on hand for support and encouragement. With a field that included professional racers Tinker Juarez, Peter Salon, Walter Savidge, Randy Jacobs, and Margaret Thompson the field was composed of veteran racers and newcomers to this brutal climb. In an interview from the winner’s stand, the pros acknowleged that this hillclimb is the hardest they have ridden. The youngest racer, Jonah Thompson was 11 and raced with his father while the oldest racer was 75 year old Ray Gengenbach who rode his bike to the race from Amherst Massachussetts in a 6 day ride. All and all a good day at the races.
We captured over 1200 images for the racers this weekend and will shortly be posting a slide show.
Well it has finally happened.
After months of having people ask if I have started a blog I have finally gotten around to it. I will be posting information here regarding event photography or anything else regarding photography that I think may be interesting or of use. I hope you find this blog useful and informative. Please give me any feedback you think might help me improve the blog.
